What started out as a casual hobby in the 1990s has become a multi-billion dollar industry, where championships are watched live by millions of fans and where players compete with one another for cash prizes. Sometimes referred to as e-sports or e-games, competitive professional gaming – or eSports – is now the world’s fastest growing sport 1.
Unlike traditional sports, esports games are often played on a computer or console and pit teams against one another to win. Some of the most popular eSports titles include MOBAs (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena), first-person shooters (FPS), fighting games, card games, and real-time strategy (RTS).
Major eSports events like the League of Legends World Championships and The International draw in millions of viewers to watch top teams from all over the world compete against each other. Other eSports, such as Valorant and the CDL Champions series, are known for their high stakes matches that showcase incredible skill.
While many people have only ever heard of the biggest names in eSports, there are hundreds of other teams and players that aren’t as widely recognized. However, they still work hard and compete in many different eSports tournaments.
Some of the most famous eSports players include Faker (League of Legends), s1mple (Counter-Strike), OG (League of Legends), and Puppey (Dota 2), all of whom have won several championships and made tens of millions in prize money. The University of North Dakota was the first institution in the country to offer a Bachelor of Science in Esports in 2022, an interdisciplinary degree program that covers kinesiology, communication, business, and more.
