Impact of Climate Change on Global Flood Frequency

Climate change is becoming an increasingly urgent global issue, impacting various aspects of the environment, including increasing the frequency of floods throughout the world. In recent decades, data shows a drastic increase in the number of flood events, especially in areas previously unaccustomed to such conditions. This phenomenon is triggered by several factors, including increasing global temperatures, changes in rainfall patterns, and rising sea levels. One of the direct impacts of climate change is an increase in temperature which causes faster water evaporation. This results in more water vapor in the atmosphere, which means more intense rainfall. Research shows that when extreme weather occurs, stronger storms can trigger large amounts of rainfall in a short period of time, causing flash flooding. For example, in the United States, heavy rain events have increased by around 20% over the past decade. Urban areas are not immune from this impact. As more and more land is allocated for development, the soil’s ability to absorb water decreases. This becomes a serious problem when extreme rain hits, causing water runoff that has the potential to cause flooding. In big cities like Jakarta, flooding often occurs due to poor drainage and high population density. Rising sea levels due to melting ice in Greenland and Antarctica also trigger flooding. Coastal areas, which are home to millions of people, are increasingly threatened by seawater intrusion. Projections show that many coastal cities could experience severe inundation in the coming decades, building social and economic instability. Globally, flooding is not only enabled by these factors, but also combined with poor resource management. Deforestation and land conversion for agriculture increase the risk of flooding by removing natural protection. Vegetation functions to retain water, so its presence is very important in reducing the impact of flooding. We also see that the most vulnerable and poor communities are often hardest hit by flood events. They typically do not have adequate infrastructure to mitigate or adapt to climate change. This creates a perpetuating cycle of poverty, where floods destroy lives and livelihoods, resulting in huge economic losses. Facing these challenges, governments and international organizations are trying to develop mitigation and adaptation strategies. Technology such as early warning systems and the development of green infrastructure are the main focus in reducing flood risk. However, the success of these efforts depends greatly on the willingness of countries and individuals to jointly face the challenge of climate change. In a global context, one thing is clear: climate change is changing the landscape of flood frequency, and to change the course of this crisis, we need more significant and planned collective action.
