Gender equality in sports is a key issue in society. Sport is a powerful medium that can promote gender equality through teaching women and girls teamwork, self-reliance, resilience and confidence. In addition, women in sport defy gender stereotypes and are inspirational role models for young people. Nevertheless, there are still many challenges and obstacles that persist. These include: the lack of support and funding, the perception that men are better athletes, internalized sexism in schools and in the media, discrimination, and the fact that people think that it is more enjoyable to watch male athletes.
In this context, it is important to understand how gender inequality in sports is experienced by women themselves. In the present study, focus groups were conducted with female athletes at different levels of competition, as well as with sports managers, physical education teachers and coaches. The participants shared their opinions on the main causes of gender inequality in sports and suggested some strategies to combat it.
The following are some of the main conclusions from this research: According to the participants, the most significant cause of gender inequality in sports is the social structure where discrimination and biases persist. This must be changed by establishing policies that promote equal access to sport, closing the pay gap and prioritising survivor-focused and trauma-informed responses. Also, increased investment in women’s sports and awareness campaigns that highlight this issue are essential. Additionally, it is necessary to foster women’s leadership and develop mixed and inclusive sports projects.
